Zen & Buddhism Q&As

What is Zazen?

Zazen is seated meditation. It is our primary activity.

There are two widely known forms of zazen: koan meditation and shikantaza.

In koan meditation, the practitioner focusses on an account of a Zen interaction, usually one that took place in medieval China. Koan meditation is most frequently associated with the Rinzai school of Zen, but koans also crop up in Soto Zen.

In shikantaza, the practitioner sits without an object of meditation. Shikantaza is usually associated with Soto Zen.
