Zen & Buddhism Q&As

What is Dropping off Body and Mind?

The practice of Zazen in the tradition of Master Dogen has a technical term called ‘dropping off body and mind’.

‘Dropping off body and mind’ means that when we are sitting, we are doing our best to put our sense of self to one side and be as open as we can be towards everything.

We aren’t trying to control our mind. We aren’t trying to have better thoughts or no thoughts. What we are trying to do is to decentre the self from our experience. And by decentring the self from our experience, the world is illuminated.
